GHI Smart Furnaces recently completed a €13 million turnkey project for Metalogenia, a leading European company in the earthmoving machinery sector. This project involved the design, manufacturing, and commissioning of a state-of-the-art foundry and heat treatment plant in Monzón, Huesca.
Project Highlights
Metalogenia’s new plant showcases their dedication to continuous improvement and innovation. The facility produces medium-carbon, low-alloy cast parts that offer exceptional wear and impact resistance, ensuring top-notch performance for their clients.
Advanced Foundry Equipment
GHI designed and installed an 8-ton Smart Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) using the latest technology. This furnace features advanced transformer technology, conductive arms, hydraulic drives, and a rotating roof system. The innovative control system optimizes furnace performance, reducing energy and electrode consumption.
In addition to the EAF, GHI provided other essential equipment, including an oxygen converter, charge baskets, electrode nippling stations, and ladle heaters. The project also covered general plant engineering, including layout and civil works plans.
Automated Heat Treatment Plant
After melting, the cast parts undergo rigorous heat treatment to achieve the necessary hardness and ductility for their demanding applications. GHI developed a fully automated heat treatment plant for austenitizing, quenching, and tempering. Operators need only select the desired treatment recipe from a computer database; the process is fully automated from there. The plant also features cutting-edge thermographic cameras to monitor the temperature of each piece in real time.
Industry 4.0 and Smart Process Improvement
Both the foundry and heat treatment plants are integrated with GHI’s Smart Process Improvement platform. This includes advanced sensorization, data capture, and digitalization technologies, ensuring seamless operation and enhanced efficiency in line with Industry 4.0 standards.
Financial Backing
This ambitious project received co-financing from SPRI, the Business Development Agency of the Basque Government, highlighting its importance and potential impact on the industry.
